One of my favorite things to see and photograph is sculpture. The crazier and stranger, the better. San Antonio is one of the destinations I visit a couple times a year. The magnificent sculpture above, can be found (at least as of this writing) in the San Antonio airport. For me it represents how much the travel industry has changed. It used to be so simple. I remember meeting my family and friends by their gate. Security was so much different too. And the suitcases! They were made from a heavier material and no wheels. We had to lug those things everywhere. We had every piece to those too. We had the large suitcase (beige) and the medium suitcase (navy blue). We also had the cosmetic and toiletries case and the hat box. I can still smell that rubber along the edges.
One thing I remember most about planning a trip is sitting at the phone with a legal pad full of toll-free numbers to airlines, rental cars, and hotels. It’s so much easier now with the Internet. And the maps! Now we have a little box that tells us exactly when and where to turn. My parents taught me how to read a road map when I was about ten. It was actually a fun little thing to pass the times while driving.
I added a couple of fun links you might want to check out about traveling in the earlier days.
